I suppose it boils down to personal choice and taste. For me, the movement has to be in a metal case. The movement also has to be mechanical -- winding or automatics. Of course, it has to keep time well (tolerance of +/-15s per month). I prefer metal bands that are strong or luxury leather bands. It also has to withstand the elements (my preference is for at least 200m diving).
Thus, the first watch which I bought for myself was the Oris Diver. That was way back in 1996. Oris no longer makes this model. I sold the watch a couple of years after I bought it and never took a pic of the watch. Thus, I thought I would google for a pic of the watch and only managed to find one...
Why did I sell the watch?
After I bought the watch, I had to bring it back to the watch shop because I could see a white thin fibre in the watch. The watch shop assistant was an older man. He thought I was joking. However, with some magnification, he was able to see the fibre. He offered to take it out but he had no equipment to test the water resistance. (Note: The Oris is supposed to be 200m waterproof.) Thus, I brought it to Oris Service Centre.
Like the shop assistant, the Service Centre guy was only able to see the fibre with magnification. He convinced me that he was able to take the fibre out but did not have the equipment to test the water resistance to 200m (which was what the watch is supposed to be able to do -- withstand that pressure). However, once the watch case has been opened, the water resistance of the watch may be compromised. Thus, checking is important.
Anyway, the company offered to show me a few more watches (same model) which all had the fibre issue. Guess what? Everytime I look at any watch they showed me, I always can pick out the position of the fibre with my naked eye but no one else can!!!
Anyway, I had to compromise because I was leaving for Australia (which was why I bought the watch). The repairer took out the fibre and tested the water resistance to 100m. Oris also gave me an Oris small Swiss Army knife for helping the company -- they would have to go to the assembly line and find out why there is a fibre in each watch.
